I Nyoman Rai was born in 1972 in Gianyar, Bali. From an early age he was touched by art through other painters in his family, especially Made Kedol and Made Raka. His blend of traditional Balinese style and modern influences stem from his exposure to various countries and cultures. He predominantly uses oil paint, but regularly experiments with other materials. He currently lives in Bali with his wife, daughter and son.
